The Afghan MP Who Ran Against Her Husband And Won
Monday's Taliban bomb attack on the Afghan parliament once again highlighted the dangers of taking part in the democratic process in the country. The MP and women's rights campaigner Shukria Barakzai was herself the target of a suicide bombing last year. Yet she also recently took part in a historic meeting with members of the Taliban in Norway. When she spoke to Matthew Bannister last week, Shukria began by talking about her experiences during Afghanistan's civil war of the early 1990's. Photo: Massoud Hossaini/AFP/Getty Images.
