Windley, Derbyshire: Standing in Line
Lester Simpson is a musician with folk band Coope, Boyes and Simpson. Years ago he discovered the story of Albert Scrimshaw, his great uncle.
After marrying Annie Wass from Windley, Albert went to war 鈥 little is then known of what happened to him as his letters and postcodes would only say 鈥淪omewhere is France鈥 or 鈥淪omewhere in Flanders鈥.
Albert died during the conflict. Annie was left living in Windley and Duffield a widow 鈥 she never remarried.
It was after being invited to play at a peace concert in Flanders that Lester began researching his relative鈥檚 story. He travelled to Mending Military Cemetery where Albert is buried. The story inspired him to eventually write the Album Standing in Line.
