UK's 'best new building' shortlist announced
The shortlist for this year's Riba Stirling Prize for the UK's best new building revealed
The shortlist for this year's Riba Stirling Prize for the UK's best new building has been revealed.
Amongst the candidates are housing projects, a school, a university building and a cancer care centre.
"What we're seeing is not the flamboyance and exuberance of previous years", said Jane Duncan, president elect of Riba.
"I think we have to acknowledge, this is a period we've been through in the last seven years of real recession which affects construction industry, almost one of the first industries to be hit."
Despite the recession, the candidates are "careful, resourceful, meaningful buildings", she added.
Four of the six shortlisted buildings are located in London, along with candidates in Manchester and Lanarkshire.
The winner will be announced in central London on 15 October.
The six shortlisted buildings are as follows:
- Burntwood School, Wandsworth by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
- Darbishire Place, E1 by Niall McLaughlin Architects
- Maggie's Lanarkshire by Reiach and Hall Architects
- NEO Bankside, SE1 by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners
- University of Greenwich Stockwell Street Building, SE10 by Heneghan Peng architects
