Crossing a massive crevasse on Everest’s deadly slopes
The Icefall Doctors have the most dangerous job on Mount Everest. Before the climbing season can begin, they must rope a safe route through Everest’s most fearsome obstacle: the notorious Khumbu Icefall. The Icefall is a constantly shifting mass of ice blocks the size of buildings, which can collapse at any time. Temba Sherpa is new to the Icefall Doctors and on his first ascent of the Icefall, the team reaches a huge crevasse blocking their route – a cleft in the ice 50 metres deep, with no way round. Temba must take on the most hazardous role of all: he will be the first to cross the crevasse.
