Tony Blair has told The Guardian that the Labour party faces annihilation if Jeremy Corbyn wins the leadership election.

An advocate of Mr Corbyn, Ken Livingstone defended the Labour candidate on the Today programme.

''Tony Blair clearly hasn't read Jeremy Corbyn's manifesto", Mr Livingstone said, claiming that Mr Blair focused on personal attacks instead of policy.

Jeremy has worked out a way in which we can get rid of the deficit and modernise our economy, said the former London mayor.

"Jeremy Corbyn is actually looking at the future."

Criticising the past administration, Mr Livingstone said that the last Labour government 'fell in love with the banks'.

We need a better range of jobs and businesses 'so we don't get sucked down by the banks again', Mr Livingstone said.

"And that's what Corbyn is focusing on."

Speaking about the recent surge of Labour support, Mr Livingstone said 'we haven't had numbers like this for 40 years'.

However, asked if Jeremy Corbyn expected a victory, he replied 'we're not taking anything for granted'.
