Labour MP Liz Kendall has told the Today Programme that the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of Labour would mean the end of the party as a serious alternative to the Conservatives.

"I don’t want to see Labour submit our resignation letter to the British people as a serious party of government," said Ms Kendall.

"Jeremy offers easy answers", the Labour MP told Today.

These answers are not new - they are exactly the same as in the 1980s, said Ms Kendall.

"If Corbyn were elected, I do not believe we would be re-elected in 2020", she said.

Ms Kendall added that in the event of a UK vote to stay in the EU, Corbyn said he would not rule out voting 'no'.

The Labour MP said that she feared Labour being reduced to a protest party.

"I want us to change the world - I don’t want us to protest on the sidelines", she said.
