One man who tested the limits of authenticity in US politics is Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont who ran for the Democratic nomination in 2004. But was he just too real for the American electorate? "At some point I had to make the turn from being an insurgent to being somebody people could see as president and I really struggled to do that."
