With Michael Cox (flute) and the London Sinfonietta conducted by Thierry Fischer. The ‘memorial’ aspect of this work is that it is Boulez’s tribute to the Ensemble InterContemporain’s principal flautist, Lawrence Beauregard, who died in 1985. Boulez reworked material from his ‘…explosante-fixe…’, a work which began in 1972 as a piece for three instruments, later expanded for larger ensemble and electronics. The present version is scored for flute, two horns, two violas and cello.
