Germany – home to Europe’s biggest economy – is often the preferred destination for those fleeing conflict and with the continent engulfed by the current refugee crisis, football fans in the country have expressed their feelings on the matter by unfurling banners at many matches that simply read "Refugees Welcome".

So what has caused this open support from football fans? Two of the most prominent writers on German football, Ronald Reng and first Raphael Honigstein, give Sportshour’s Caroline Barker their thoughts.
