How important is India for Amazon?
India's online shopping industry has exploded over the past couple of years and UBS has estimated the market will be worth $50 billion by 2020.
But strict laws mean that online sellers must be marketplace platforms - meaning they can only sell on behalf of others - and so far, the industry has been dominated by deep discounting. This has lured customers but has also seen companies burning through cash and making heavy losses.
Big locals players like Flipkart and Snapdeal have attracted billions of dollars of investment as they fight for domination but they are up against US giant Amazon, which last year said it was investing $2bn in India and has another $5bn put aside for expansion.
