Faraday House, Hampton Court Green: Home of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh
Princess Sophia Duleep Singh was a daughter of Duleep Singh, Maharajah of the Punjab.
The God-daughter of Queen Victoria and a prominent suffragette, Princess Sophia lived in Faraday House on Hampton Court Green as a grace and favour resident.
She was a member of the Tax Resistance League. Her refusal to pay taxes led to several fines and the confiscation of her jewellery.
During World War One she was heavily involved in raising awareness of the contribution of Indian soldiers.
She organised fundraising 鈥渇lag days鈥 to raise funds for wounded servicemen, visited many in hospital and after the war entertained Indian soldiers at her home.
Princess Sophia died in 1948.
