The Indian Ocean

Seafaring on the Indian Ocean from Arabia to Bengal and the art of Arab navigation

The oceans and seas of the world, and the enterprise and ingenuity that has been used to master them.

Episode two: The history of seafaring on the Indian Ocean, from Arabia to Bengal, including a visit to a shipyard still making wooden dows, and the art of Arab navigation.

"They developed an instrument called a kamal, consisting of a wooden card with a hole in the middle and a string. By holding the string between the teeth and getting the bottom card on the horizon and the top of the card on the pole star, they could tell the latitude."
