From Asylum to Humane Environment
Bob Grove describes a psychiatric colony which resembled an 18th Century 'madhouse'
"One of the worst examples of an asylum in Europe.
"The first thing that we saw was a large, wired compound, with 200 men all in grey flannel just wandering around aimlessly... Looking like caged animals."
Mental health professional Bob Grove talks about a psychiatric colony on the Greek island of Leros. When he first visited it in 1987, the scenes there compared to the madhouses of the 18th Century. He has been working there for ten years with an EU programme to try to transform the asylum into a more humane environment.
*This programme about an inadequate psychiatric facility contains some scenes which some listeners may find upsetting.*
