Tax Credits, Kennels & Ice Cream
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Controversial cuts to tax credits are in limbo this morning - after the Government was defeated on the issue in the House of Lords last night. Peers voted to delay the changes over fears that millions of working people could be left worse off. The Chancellor, George Osborne, says he'll come up with a new version of the policy. But he's also accusing the House of Lords of over-stepping the mark in last night's vote.
Also, if you found a stray dog, would you know what to do with it? If you're a dog owner, can you animal be identified? Well it's highly likely that if your dog disappears it'll end up at College Garth Kennels at Hathern near Loughborough. It takes in around three and a half thousand dogs each year from across Leicestershire - with a four percent rise in the number of strays handed in last year. It costs thousands of pounds to assess and care for the dogs, and apart from a small payment made by councils, the work is funded entirely by charity.
And, have you noticed the number of ice-cream and dessert parlours popping up across our city? Of course, if you're a fan of a sweet treat, all that choice is surely a good thing... but one health expert is warning that we should think twice before grabbing a spoon. Leicester already struggles with worrying rates of diabetes, obesity and dental health and it's feared that we may be a little too quick to indulge.
