It鈥檚 time to plant your Conifers

It鈥檚 time to plant your Conifers

Now is a good time to plant Conifers, especially those suitable for small gardens. Most Conifers require a slightly acidy soil, however, if the soil in your area is a little on the alkaline side then Conifers planted into containers in a lime free compost will do just as well聽

Though there are many hundreds of Conifers to choose from I can recommend four of my favourites which are ideal for smaller spaces.聽

ABIES BALSAMEA 'HUSONIANA' which is a very prostrate form with glossy green foliage聽and looks great in rockeries, CRYTOMERIA JAPONICA 'VILMORINIANA' with tight packed foliage which is quite congested in growth and although the green is very vibrant in the summer the foliage turns to a rich purple in the winter months.聽

JUNIPERUS COMMUNIS 'COMPRESSA' is聽 a tight conical bush which makes a great carpet especially if planted in threes and PICEA MARIANA 'NANA' which is better known as Black Spruce forms a tight congested ball of green blue, the blue being more predominant in the summer This variety is a very hardy type and will tolerate very hard frosts.聽

Still continue to cut lawns, albeit a little higher as this will help to develop the root system making for a much healthier lawn next spring. And if you have a chance, why not aerate the lawn by spiking the whole area allowing the moisture to evaporate and the air to get around the root system.聽

Happy Gardening! Colin
