The Premier League star who gambled millions
Former Premier League player Matthew Etherington has told the Victoria Derbyshire programme how the footballing lifestyle drove him to a gambling addiction.
The ex-Stoke midfielder, who used to earn 拢30,000-a-week, said he spent more than 拢1.5m at bookmakers between 2000 and 2009.
He said bookmakers used to turn up to his former club West Ham United's training ground asking for the money that he owed them.
Etherington has since attended Gambler Anonymous meetings at the Sporting Chance Clinic, which was founded by ex-Premier League defender Tony Adams.
