The story of the Battle of Jersey
2016 is the 235th anniversary of the Battle of Jersey, a decisive moment in the history of Jersey.
The Death of Major Pierson is captured in the painting of the same name by John Singleton Copley which he painted in 1783.
The picture celebrates the British defence of Jersey against the French invasion in 1781 and also pays tribute to the young Major, Francis Peirson, who lost his life.
The original painting is currently on display at Tate Britain but a copy can be seen in Jersey's Royal Court.
David Dorgon tells the story.
