Belfast: The War in Advertising
Advertising has never been known for its subtlety and has always used the times to sell products. This was also the case during the First World War where advertisers used the conflict to hawk their wares. Newspaper adverts would draw comparisons between common household products and the bravery of the men fighting at the front in ways that today we would find tasteless. Nigel Henderson takes a look at these adverts in the News Letter archives.
