David and Dave: Volunteering for the Unthinkable
On a cold and windy night in 1984 they accepted an invitation to have a look in the underground Royal Observer Post which was on the outskirts of the town. Part of a chain of over fifteen hundred concrete bunkers constructed in the UK at the height of the Cold War to observe and locate the nuclear explosions that would have brought an end to civilisation as we know it. Intrigued by what they saw, they decided to join the voluntary service, signed the Official Secrets Act, trained hard, and served in the ROC until it was disbanded in 1991. It became a big part of their lives, with plenty of opportunities to socialise and have fun. . . . But they were never allowed to forget that their job was deadly serious . . . .www.rocassoc.org.uk
