The grounds of the Royal Dublin Society are best known as the home of the prestigious Dublin Horse Show. The Society itself was set up in 1731 to promote good agricultural and scientific practice.

But during the First World War, the RDS became a Remount Depot. Horses from all over the island were brought to its stables, graded, trained for warfare and then sent on to the front.

Nine million horses and mules died during the war. Noel Mullins from the Royal Dublin Society tells the story of Ireland's war horses - and of Gladeye who survived the war, returned to jump at the RDS and even attended a royal ceremony for veteran war horses in London.
