David and Dave: Community Service
For eight years they were part of a team of part-time volunteers who manned an underground bunker on the edge of Appleby. They had an important role to play in warning the civilian population of fallout in the event of a nuclear war, and helping to co-ordinate the local rescue services. But when the ROC was abruptly disbanded in 1991 after the end of Cold War, it left a bitter sweet taste in the mouth for the volunteers. In memory of their fellow volunteers, in 2014 they restored one of the best preserved underground monitoring posts in Cumbria, situated in the shadow of Blencathra near Threlkeld. www.rocassoc.org.uk
