Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote 'Ol' Man River', about the Mississippi, as the backbone to the musical Show Boat. It has endured as a political anthem of oppressed people and a song of deep comfort. Contributors include Cleo Laine, Paul Robeson Jr and Tony Benn who recalls hearing Paul Robeson singing it at the House of Lords Tea Room.
