Harold Wilson led Labour to three general election outright wins and, in a fourth contest, saw his party emerge with the most seats in a hung parliament. His government held the UK's last referendum on what was then membership of the European Economic Community, abolished capital punishment and promised to harness the famous 'white heat' of the technological revolution to improve society.

This week marks the 100th anniversary of his birth, and Labour MP Barry Sheerman is calling for him to be recognised as one of the 20th century's greatest prime ministers with a statue in the House of Commons.
