Butterfly Conservation

Spring has sprung and it won't be long before the wildlife that's been hibernating and lurking in our gardens bursts back into life.

The wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation is calling on gardeners across Leicestershire and Rutland to help solve the mystery of the UK's back garden butterflies.

Long-running studies mean we know more about the UK's countryside and habitat specialist butterflies than any other insect group in the world with information dating back hundreds of years. But we know very little about the butterflies closest to us - those living in our gardens.

The newly launched Garden Butterfly Survey will attempt to lift the lid on how garden butterflies are faring.

Jonathan has been to the University of Leicester's Botanic Gardens in Oadby to look out for our flapping friends.

Only one problem. It wasn't a good day to look for them, as he found out with my guide Adrian Russell, the County Recorder for butterflies and moths in Leicestershire and Rutland.
