In the Cool Seat, Kate Charles, described by the Oxford Times as "a most English writer", is in fact an expatriate American now living in Ludlow.
By the age of ten Kate had read all the Agatha Christie novels and admits she actually wept when the plane landed on English soil for her first visit. As she tells Jim her life-story, Kate leaves him speechless with the punch-line which she admits, though true, wouldn't be allowed in one of her books!
