Queen Elizabeth II opens community centre in Aberfan: 1973
On 9 March 1973, seven years after the 1966 disaster, the Queen made a speech at the opening ceremony of Aberfan's new community centre. She laid a wreath at the village鈥檚 memorial garden in memory of the victims.
She first went to Aberfan just a week after the disaster on 21 October 1966. A huge tip of coal mining waste material, loosened by heavy rain, slid down a hill behind the village, engulfing houses and Pantglas junior school. Half the school community - 116 pupils and five teachers - died in their classrooms. The death toll in Aberfan reached 144 in total.
