Stem Cells – Turning skin cells into stem cells

Turning mouse skin cells into stem cells was a major breakthrough by Dr Yamanaka

In the second of three programmes about stem cell research, Sue Broom follows the story from Professor Shinya Yamanaka's discovery of how to reprogramme adult iPS cells from mice (induced Pluripotent Stem Cells) back to their embryonic state. The possibilities of medical treatments derived from iPS cells are enormous and hold out real hope of one day finding patient-specific treatments for Parkinson's, Alzheimers and other major human diseases.
