An American lawyer in Afghanistan

Kimberley Motley on representing Farkhunda's family

In March last year, a young Afghan woman called Farkhunda Malikzada was beaten to death in broad daylight by a mob after she was falsely accused of burning the Koran. There was an unprecedented public outcry - and people were talking about this being a turning point for women in Afghanistan. The trial was also a first - it was televised. Kimberley Motley was the American lawyer representing Farkhunda's family. She tells Jo Fidgen why she was initially reluctant to take on the case.
