It was immortalised in Macbeth, when the three witches prophesised that he should 'never vanquish'd be until; Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill; Shall come against him'.

But now there appears to be 'something rotten' in Birnam Wood. The only tree thought to survive from Shakespeare's time is at risk. Colin Blane reports.
