As it Happened
Hull was badly hit on the evening of the 7th May 1941, but business in the city carried on as normal. went to work at Boots the chemist only find it had been bombed.聽
On the night of the 8th May the bombers returned...
23:40 - The first air raid siren sounded.
- was a cycle messenger and immediately reported for duty.
00:10 - A parachute mine hits Pembroke Grove, East Hull.
- 2 people killed, 15 people injured
- 12 houses demolished, 80 badly damaged, 100 slightly damaged
00:10 - A parachute mine lands on Foston Road, East Hull.
- 9 people killed, 11 people injured
- 20 houses demolished, 100 badly damaged, 300 slightly damaged
00:50 - A bomb falls on Park Street Children's Hospital
- No casualties
- Unitarian Church next door set on fire
- was sheltering in the cellar of the church at the time
01:00 - A bomb lands on Kelvin Street
- 1 person killed, 5 injured
- 6 houses demolished and 80 badly damaged
01:00 - Bombs and incendiary devices fall on Hedon Road, Craven Street, Earle's Road, Wyke Street &聽Assinder Grove
- 3 people killed, 6 people injured
- 3 houses, saw mill and communal shelter demolished
- 42 houses and 42 shops were badly damaged
- , taking shelter when waves of bombers passed overhead
02:30 - Bombs and incendiaries fall on Eagle Oil Mills
- 2 people dies and the mill was demolished
- 25 houses, 2 shops and garages badly damaged in a major fire
02:30 - Ordnance also fell on Rank's and the Drypool area
- 4 people died and 1 was injured
- 20 houses, 10 shops, and timber rolling stock demolished
- Church and public house badly damaged
- Rank's Mill gutted
03:20聽- A parachute mine hits the Cornelius Parish garage on Anlaby Road
- 2 fire watchers and 2 members of the Auxillary Fire Service killed
04:30 - A bomb hits Barnsley Street
- 6 people injured
- 60 houses and 1 shop badly damaged
- 100 houses and 5 shops slightly damaged
04:50 - An incendiary in Paragon Street badly damaged the hotel
05:15 - Warehouses聽in Humber Street were badly damaged
- It's not know how many people were hurt.
05:50 - The all clear sounds
- It wasn't just people who needed to be rescued from the rubble. One rescued 2,000 animals during the Hull Blitz.聽
