Skiing in Afghanistan
Swiss journalist Christoph Zuercher was working on a story in Bamiyan in the central highlands of Afghanistan when he found himself at a loose end, waiting for one of the few flights out of the region. Then he had a thought - how would it be to ski down those mountains? He returned the following year with several pairs of skis and the dream of starting a ski school. Now the Bamiyan Ski Club is training two skiers for the Winter Olympics and Alishah Farhang is one of them. Alishah and Christoph told Outlook that getting local people on the slopes began as an uphill struggle.
