How often have we found ourselves drawn to a painting where the very soul of a person seems to be on display? What magic makes it reveal more than a photograph? I can't answer that. But I know a man who can. I took Colin Davidson, an artist particularly celebrated for his portraits, on a tour of the BP Portrait Award exhibition at the Ulster Museum - and asked him first, why paint portraits in the age of photography?
