Theresa May Promises 'A Better Britain'
Theresa May promises to build a "better Britain" and to make Brexit a "success" as she prepares to succeed David Cameron as UK prime minister.
The battle to become Britain's next Prime Minister is over. Theresa May will take over on Wednesday from David Cameron, who said he was quitting after the country voted to leave the EU. The rapid change at the top took the country by surprise. Just this morning Mrs May was facing an opponent in her bid to take the top job. But by lunchtime Andrea Leadsom had stepped away from the challenge, joining the line of other politicians who had campaigned hard for Brexit before standing down or being forced out of the leadership race. Although she campaigned to remain in the EU, Mrs May has vowed to make the UK united once more. Her first major hurdle will be negotiating the terms of Britain's exit from the European Union.
In America, the coffee chain Starbucks has announced a wage increase for more than 150,000 employees. On Monday, CEO Howard Schulz said Starbucks would increase the base pay of its managers and coffee makers by 5 percent. He's also offering more stock options and more choice in picking health cover, which could push the overall increases up to 15 percent. So how significant a move is this in a country dominated by minimum-wage service jobs?
Japanese firm Nintendo's has finally entered the smartphone market. It's embraced so called augmented reality and sent its Pokemon characters out into the big wide world. The Pokemon Go app connects a user's location to the game as they try to catch on-screen characters. It's been such a big hit since its US launch last week, that the firm's share price has soared by more than 20 per cent.
