Mills: England manager could never have been German
Former England international Danny Mills says there was "no realistic way" a German could have been given the England manager's job.
Jurgen Klinsmann, who played for and managed Germany, was among the favourites to replace Roy Hodgson, but Sam Allardyce was appointed.
"Imagine the songs, the banners if we had a German and lost the first game to Slovakia," said former Manchester City full-back Mills. "It wouldn't be worth thinking about".
Mills, who won 19 caps, added: "Because of what the FA have done with the coaching pathways for young coaches, if they then suddenly put a foreigner in charge, they're saying 'there's no point aspiring to be at the top because you're never going to be there'".
