Full coverage of the men's marathon from the Sambodromo.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge has been the most consistent athlete over recent seasons and is a good bet to come out on top. He has Olympic silver and bronze medals from Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004 respectively and, at 31, may see this as his last chance to complete the set. His record is impressive too; having won the last two marathons in London, he ran within eight seconds of the world record and also finished first in the highly competitive Berlin Marathon in 2015.

Training partner Stephen Kiprotich will hope to push him all the way, particularly as he is the reigning champion and won the world title in 2013. Last year's disappointing sixth-placed finish at the World Championships in Beijing aside, he has good pedigree in this event. A further challenge to Kipchoge's dominance could also come from Eritrea's 20 year old world champion Ghirmay Ghebreselassie.

British interest in the marathon comes from brothers Callum and Derek Hawkins while Eritrean-born Tsegai Tewelde makes his Olympic bow for Team GB to complete an incredible turnaround in his personal circumstances.
