Rio cycling road race descent was ‘dangerous’ – Boardman
Former Olympic individual pursuit champion Chris Boardman says parts of the road race course were unsafe following a huge crash involving Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten.
Van Vleuten, 33, had pulled clear with 10km to go, but came off her bike on a sharp turn while travelling at speed down the Vista Chinesa descent.
Cycling's governing body, the International Cycling Union, said Van Vleuten was "conscious and able to communicate".
Further medical checks were being made at hospital, the UCI statement added.
“Looking at the edges of the road, nothing was done for the vast majority of the climb to protect the riders in the event of a fall,” Boardman said.
“Whoever signed of that course to say it was safe enough was wrong,
“It wasn’t technical it was dangerous,” he added.
