Film Now with Danny Leigh: Others

From refugees to alien invasion, Danny takes the temperature of our era through its films.

In the final episode of Film Now, Danny Leigh turns his attention to a key motif of our time: Others. Refugees, colonialist fallout, suspected terrorists and alien invasion all feature as Danny takes the temperature of our era through its movies’ depictions of the other.

Hidden (2005) is an icy thriller set in Paris that explores the West’s fears. Children of Men (2006) depicts Britain as the last country standing in a global societal meltdown caused by human infertility, complete with a refugee camp in sleepy Bexhill. Monsters (2010), a mayhem-filled budget alien invasion movie, finds a young American couple trekking across Mexico as refugees and finally seeing… a vast wall on the border. And for Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Katherine Bigelow’s controversial film about the manhunt for Osama Bin Laden, Danny considers what might have been in the director’s mind.

Others is the sixth and final episode of Film Now with Danny Leigh: What the Hell Happened?, a series about film in the 21st century.
