Former Premier League player on the “obscene” money in football
The “obscene amounts of money” in modern football is “madness” according to former Tottenham, West Ham and Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington.
Premier League clubs spent £1.165bn on players in the summer transfer window, smashing last year’s record of £870m. 13 Premier League clubs have also broken their transfer records.
“I thought that two or three years ago it would hit a peak and level out, but it seems to be getting higher and higher,“ Etherington said.
Premier League clubs have benefited from a record £5.1bn television deal which came into effect this season.
