Why my father founded the Paralympics
Sir Ludwig Guttmann was a Jewish doctor who fled the Nazis, and went on to found the Paralympics.
He founded the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, but as well as providing innovative treatment, he directed patients towards sporting activities including wheelchair polo, basketball and archery.
Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who died in 1980, is now known as the father of the Paralympic Games and is commemorated by a life-size statue at Stoke Mandeville stadium.
His daughter Eva Loeffler says he was a difficult man but enormously determined.
She said "He dreamt of a time when there would be an Olympic Games for people with disabilities, but of course nobody believed him.
"But he had that belief, he thought it would happen."
