Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall: Poaching situation ‘desperate’
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, the celebrity chef, journalist and environmental campaigner, has said the UK government must step up efforts to tackle the ivory trade in order to stop fuelling the poaching of African elephants.
His new ý1 series, Saving Africa's Elephants: Hugh And The Ivory War, found that more than 80 elephants are killed per day in Africa for their ivory, which experts say may lead to their extinction in just 25 years.
Hugh said the poaching situation is “desperate” because “we have a very lively, buoyant ivory trade here in the UK”.
“Both China and America have announced that they will ban the trade of solid ivory objects – we’re lagging behind,” he added.
