'My mother gave my baby to stranger in white coat'

The head of the Catholic Church in Britain has apologised to young unmarried mothers who were pressured into handing over their babies for adoption in the decades after the Second World War.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, said Catholic adoption agencies had been 鈥渓acking in care and sensitivity鈥.

Diana鈥檚 baby was adopted in a process overseen by the Catholic Church. She had just 12 days with her baby before she was taken away.

She said: 鈥渨hen someone came out to take her, I still thought they won鈥檛 make me do this, people will rally around me鈥.

鈥淏ut then my mother took her from my arms and handed her to a stranger in a white coat.鈥

Diana and her daughter were reunited 18 years later but Diana told us 鈥渋t doesn鈥檛 take away the years you lose鈥.
