Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya has been revealed as the December cover star for Elle fashion magazine in South Africa, sparking huge local reaction.

In 2009, her gender was questioned in front of the world. Semenya was cleared to compete in 2010 after being sidelined for 11 months while she was forced to undergo tests. This year she won 800m Olympic gold in Rio.

Elle journalist Tidi Benbenisti and publisher Gisele Wertheim Aymes shared the editorial thinking behind the cover story.
