Woman nuclear engineer: ‘I dared to be different’

A woman nuclear engineering apprentice has told 5 live that men outnumber women in science and engineering because “there aren’t enough role models for women”.

Amy Lambden is in her fourth year of an nuclear engineering apprenticeship at the Atomic Weapons Establishment, who are trying to recruit more female apprentices in these fields.

Recent research shows that men outnumber women on engineering apprenticeships by around 25 to one.

Amy said: “I dared to be different.”

“A lot of people don’t, because they worry about stereotypes and about what other people will think, but I wanted to take a different path,” she added.
