MP who lost son: ‘Children deserve the dignity of a funeral’
Labour MP Carolyn Harris has told 5 live that the government should set aside £10m to pay for all children’s funerals.
The MP for Swansea East spoke about the pain of losing of her eight-year-old son, Martin, and her struggle to fund his funeral as she was working as a barmaid in 1989 when he died.
She raised the issue in the House of Commons earlier this week, and said Prime Minister Theresa May asked whether families could apply for a social fund to cover costs.
“At that time, I couldn’t fill the kettle, let alone the 35 page form required to get the fund,” Carolyn told us.
Ms Harris said: “I remember thinking, don’t people know the world has come to an end? Why are they still delivering mail, why are they still delivering milk when the world has ended?”
“But it was just my world that had ended.”
