For Keeps
Written by Tracey Hammett
Read by Francine ChamberlainDaisy had a tricycle. It had three black wheels, a black seat and black handle bars. The rest of it was red鈥 apart from the silver bell.
Daisy was very good at steering her tricycle.听鈥淟ook mummy I鈥檓 going in a big circle.鈥 听Daisy was very good at pedalling her tricycle 鈥μ 鈥淚鈥檓 going fast! Wooooohooooooooo!鈥 听And Daisy was very good at ringing the bell. 听Daisy always liked to ride her tricycle to the park when she went with Mum and Meg to feed the ducks.
One day, while they were feeding the ducks they met Mum鈥檚 friend, Debbie, and her daughter Tara. 听Tara was older than Daisy.听 She had a shiny blue bicycle 鈥 with two wheels and a rather big bell. 听
鈥淢y bicycle is bigger than your tricycle,鈥 Tara told Daisy.
鈥淵es,鈥 said Daisy.
鈥淎nd I think my bell is louder!鈥 said Tara, ringing her bell.
Daisy rang her tricycle bell just to check.
鈥淵es, your bell is the loudest,鈥 said Daisy. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 lucky鈥 because my tricycle has more wheels than your bicycle.鈥
Tara thought this was very funny and she gave Daisy one of her heart sweets, it said: 鈥淵ou鈥檙e fab.鈥
Time went by and Daisy grew taller.听鈥淵ou鈥檙e getting too big for that tricycle, Daisy,鈥 said Mum. 鈥淧erhaps you should give it to your sister.鈥 听But Daisy loved her tricycle: 鈥淚鈥檓 not getting too big,鈥 she said.
Then, one afternoon there was a knock at the door.听 It was Mum鈥檚 friend Debbie and her daughter, Tara.听 Tara had brought her shiny blue bicycle. 听鈥淭ara鈥檚 got too big for her bicycle now,鈥 said Debbie, 鈥渟he鈥檇 like Daisy to have it.鈥 听鈥淲ell Tara that is very, very kind!鈥 said Daisy鈥檚 Mum. 听Tara grinned.
听鈥淲hat do you say to Tara, Daisy?鈥
听鈥淭hank you,鈥 said Daisy, delighted.
听鈥淚 know my bicycle doesn鈥檛 have as many wheels as your tricycle,鈥 whispered Tara, when she was about to leave, 鈥渂ut I hope you like it anyway.鈥 Then she gave Daisy another heart sweet, it said 鈥淟ucky Day鈥.
听
It was a lucky day for Daisy鈥檚 little sister, Meg, too, because Daisy gave her the red tricycle.听 Meg was very pleased鈥 she sat on it straight away鈥 she even ate her lunch on it.
Daisy took her new bicycle into the garden. 听First she tried out the bell. It worked very well. Then she tried out the handle bars鈥 yes鈥 they could turn both ways.听And there were brakes too.听
鈥淵ou know how to steer and you know how to pedal, but I鈥檒l have to help you with the balancing part at first,鈥 said Mum.
So Daisy sat on the bicycle and she steered and she pedalled and she tried to balance鈥 Mum held on to her shoulders and ran along with her.
听鈥淜eep pedalling!鈥 she cried
But the balancing part wasn鈥檛 as easy as Daisy thought.听 Daisy wobbled this way and that鈥
鈥淒on鈥檛 let me fall!鈥 she cried.
But she surged forward and Mum couldn鈥檛 keep up. 听It all happened very quickly鈥 and before she knew it Daisy was lying on the grass and so was the bicycle.
鈥淵ou let go!鈥 she told Mum.
鈥淪orry,鈥 said Mum. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 mean to.
鈥淵ou let go!鈥 said Daisy crossly.
鈥淲hen you fall off, it鈥檚 good to try again.鈥 Mum gave Daisy a hug.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to try again, I want my tricycle back!鈥 said Daisy, seizing her tricycle from her sister. 听Meg got very cross. 听So Mum put the bicycle and the tricycle away for a while.
听
Later, when Dad came home, Mum said 鈥淐ome on Daisy, let鈥檚 go to the park with your bicycle.鈥
鈥淲hat if I fall off again?鈥 said Daisy.
鈥淲e鈥檒l practise on the grass, so you鈥檒l have a soft landing!鈥 said Mum.听 鈥淭here鈥檒l be more space too!鈥
When they got to the park, Mum found an excellent place to practise. Daisy got on the bicycle and mum held her shoulders.
鈥淟et鈥檚 go!鈥 said Mum.
Mum gave the bike a little push and off they went 鈥 down the slope and onto the flat path.听Wibble, wobble 鈥 wibble, wobble 鈥 went Daisy on her bicycle.
鈥淵ou鈥檙e doing it!鈥 cried Mum.听 鈥淚 can鈥檛 keep up with you!鈥澨
鈥淲ow鈥, thought Daisy, 鈥渋t鈥檚 all me 鈥 and it feels like I鈥檓 flying!鈥
On the way home Mum bought Daisy a treat.听
鈥淲hat would you like?鈥 she asked her.
鈥淗eart sweets please!鈥 she answered.
Daisy couldn鈥檛 wait to tell Dad and Meg that she could ride her bicycle. 听
鈥淚 want to give the tricycle back to Meg鈥, she told her Mum.
鈥淵ou can鈥檛 keep taking it off her every time you feel cross,鈥 said Mum.
鈥淥k,鈥 said Daisy.
So Daisy gave the tricycle back to Meg.
鈥淢y bicycle is bigger than your tricycle,鈥 she told her, 鈥渁nd I think my bell is louder! But you鈥檙e lucky because your tricycle has more wheels than my bicycle鈥.
Then she gave Meg a heart sweet which said 鈥淔or Keeps鈥.
