Dr. Heimlich ‘saved my life’ in nursing home
A doctor who devised a famous method to prevent people from choking has died. Dr Henry Heimlich was 96 and his technique is believed to have saved thousands of lives.
He used his own "Heimlich manoeuvre" - which involves thrusts to the abdomen - earlier this year to save a patient at his nursing home.
Eighty-seven year old Patty Ris from Cincinatti retirement home was saved by Heimlich when he noticed she was struggling to breath: “He literally saved my life, I had just moved here and I had never met him. He was very friendly and pleasant and started chatting with me - but he was doing all the chatting and noticed I wasn’t breathing. Some chopped beef was stuck in my throat - he said ‘don’t be frightened, I’m going to help you.’”
“He became a friend, he gave me my life back. I say my prayers every day that this wonderful man was able to save me,” added Patty.
