How well do you know Dickens’ 'A Christmas Carol'?
It’s a Christmas tradition in many households to read (or watch one of the many adaptations) of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. But how well do you know the origins of the story?
Speaking to 5 live’s Phil Williams, actor Simon Callow explained how a “parliamentary report on the employment of children in mines” was the catalyst for the famous novel.
“[Dickens] wanted to strike a hammer blow on behalf of those children”, he said, “and by extension all those who were disadvantaged and the subject of the vast social injustice that was all around them.”
