Does social media lead to an unhappy Christmas?

Scrolling through social media at Christmas could make you feel miserable, rather than merry 鈥 according to researchers at the University of Copenhagen.

Dr Bernie Hogan is an Internet Sociologist, and Research Fellow at Oxford University. He said: 鈥淲e see people posting pictures of wonderful things and them having the best Christmas tree in the neighbourhood. Passive consumption and status comparisons can make people unhappy.鈥

The study particularly warns about the negative impact of "lurking" on social media 鈥 watching others鈥 cheery updates without interacting with them.

鈥淵ou can reinforce your anxieties online. We are more connected than ever, we should be asking other people how their Christmas dinner was rather than posting our own and hoping we get more likes than them,鈥 added Dr Hogan.
