How depression affected my work

Jessica Carmody says workplaces need a greater understanding of mental health issues.

Theresa May is pledging to help schools and companies in England deal with the "hidden injustice" of mental illness.

The prime minister will announce extra training for teachers, more online self-checking for those with concerns and a review of services for children and teenagers.

Since her teens, Jessica Carmody has suffered with mental health problems and feels a cultural change is needed among employers to help staff understand and cope.

鈥淚 previously had a successful job and had been working on a project for a year and a half,鈥 says Jessica, now a senior manager at KPMG.

鈥淚 started to become depressed and one day I told my boss I needed to go home. The next day they moved me to another project. I felt I had failed.鈥

鈥淚deally it would be great to have everyone in the workplace having a basic understanding of mental health, we need to treat it the same as physical health. I can appreciate it鈥檚 scary because not enough people understand this.鈥
