The sad news that ‘Granny’ – who was thought to have been over 100 years old - is missing, presumed dead reached us last week

The orca was the matriarch of a pod of Southern Resident killer whales in the North American Pacific.

She was first photographed by scientists in 1976.

The Center for Whale Research in Washington, US has studied Granny and her family for 40 years.

During that time the orca grande dame became something of a celebrity - and revealed some incredible insights into her kind.
